Test drive of Mercedes-Benz 190E

The owner is Ilya Zibarev, 45, a Muscovite, who works in the banking sector.
The car is a Mercedes 190E, W201, 1986 model, “American” in California configuration. With the mileage of 314 miles, which corresponds to 505 kilometers.

Here’s what Ilya told the editorial board.
– I am not a collector in the classical sense, I assemble cars a little haphazardly. The collection, if you call it that, is going to be for the soul, according to the principle “something was connected with these machines” and with the emphasis on “new old”. I have, for example, VAZ-2108 with the run of 600 km, Moskvich-2141 with the run of 50 km. These and other cars were marked in my life, in my childhood, youth, my parents, etc. When I got the information about this Mercedes, I decided that I must certainly get it!

The car was originally built for the U.S. market in 1986 and actually got there. A retired buyer brought a new car from the salon, put it in the garage, but, unfortunately, he never had a chance to drive it … As a result, the car turned into a classic “time capsule” and saw the light only about a year and a half ago, when the owner’s widow rented it to a local dealer who sells used cars. The dealer instantly appreciated the uniqueness of the car and resold it many times more expensive than he bought from the owner, a German car showroom specializing in old- and jangtaimers.

The car crossed the ocean for the second time and was exhibited in Germany for 90,000 euros. The car has caused a stir in the circles of German collectors – it may seem surprising, but even in the homeland of this mass and megapopular car, which was produced for more than ten years, there are virtually no copies with such mileage and in such a state (without restoration)! That very mass production made its own black business – the cars were perceived as “working horses” and were often used “in the tail and maneuver” – nobody thought to keep them in a collectible state…

However, “wanting” does not mean “buying”! German collectors, inclined to leisurely and strenuous, began to patiently wait for the price reduction. It gradually fell and reached 50,000 euros, after which some movement of potential buyers has already begun. Just at that moment I learned about the car from my local friends. I immediately sent a technical expert and a lawyer to inspect the car and, having received their conclusions, I quickly paid the declared price and took the car to Moscow! After that, as I was told by my German friends, there was a shock in the German oldtimer party that turned into a tragedy – everyone thought that sooner or later a car would be bought by one of the local venerable collectors, and no one expected that the national wealth would leave the country!

Mercedes arrived in Moscow by a covered car carrier, where he was registered and received the numbers in the usual general order. The car for the soul was not cheap – only 5 million rubles, of which one million were customs costs.


A characteristic feature of this particular specimen is the specific “recessed” headlights, which were made for import into the U.S. These are the so called “headlamps”, which are widespread over the ocean: if in a usual headlamp there is a reflector in the body, covered with glass, and inside there is a removable lamp, in the “headlamp” the reflector, glass and the lamp (a thread of incandescent in a flask) is a single and undisassembled whole. The advantages of the headlamp are its complete tightness in all conditions and absence of misting, while the disadvantages are the replacement of the entire headlamp when the lamp burns out, the need to adjust the direction of the beam after replacement, and difficulties with the installation of headlamp cleaners.

Original light-alloy discs are shoes in rubber R15 186/65 Continental Super Contact. This model of tires is not produced for many years, but in the trunk lies a new, never wearing a stock on a full-size rim.


The beige interior blends perfectly with the warmth of the body. And what a smell there – mmm … Surprisingly, but for 32 years the aroma of the new car has not only not weathered out – it feels as if it has even intensified! Let’s call it “the effect of cognac aging”, though in fact it is only the evaporation of different volatile substances – xylols, toluene, benzene, aldehydes and other chemicals, creating such a cute nose of a true motorist blend.

The textures of finishing materials are luxurious in the context of time and safety, although they are not really expensive – the model is still relatively cheap. However, they want to be touched and touched, receiving unprecedented tactile pleasure – almost like in the famous scene in “Escape from Vegas”, where the stuck heroes furiously stroked palms of their hands trimmed with fur in a nightclub, trying to keep the lost connection with reality.

The driver’s seat offers a view of Stuttgart’s impeccable classics of control and dashboard design, many elements of which have been migrating from one model to another for decades, including many years after the 190th production was discontinued.

However, some things familiar to experienced Mercedes-Benz riders are able to strain a person who has never driven a star before. For example, the button switch of modes of the heater with not too obvious pictograms of distribution of streams of air, special algorithm of inclusion of the conditioner, etc.



A special oldskulny chic – a separate button to control the extension and retraction of the telescopic antenna of the radio! And the further down the time scale, the more impressive such things seem to be, before ordinary. Seeing the control button of the electric antenna, my daughter stated: “This car from the past is much more like a car from the future than our modern car…”. With the mouths of a baby, which is called…

And symbolic, but important attributes of this “new old” car – a huge number of different papers, everywhere laid out and hung on the rope loops in the cabin and trunk. Service book, warranty, first service reminders, mini-instruction for cruise control, checks, dealer network cards, original virgin medicine cabinet, etc. There is even a native, not yet printed leather case for the ignition keys!


Under the hood of the car lives a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder longitudinally located 132 hp engine M102.985. The M102 engine family began with carburetor modifications, but the letter E in the index of the car model (190E) indicates the presence of injection (Einspritzmotor). In general, the family of these engines had versions with a volume of 1.8, 2.0, 2.3 and 2.5 liters

Under the transparent lid of the futures block hides a “nightmare of a gigulist” – rod fuses. Typical for their years, but later universally recognized as not reliable enough for high currents.

An additional electric pump for antifreeze allows it to be pumped through the heater radiator and after the engine has been switched off, providing the opportunity to use the residual heat of the engine without wasting gasoline.


On the move.

The first thing we encountered in the test drive of this “time capsule” was a fully discharged battery after a month of inactivity under the cover. “The car is 32 years old, during which its engine was started at best several dozen times…” – I pensively thought about it during the process of throwing a cheap launch booster on the battery terminals of the crocodiles. But the old German did not disgrace himself – started literally from half a turn, just instantly!

While the engine is warming up, I get settled behind the wheel. Landing is rather high – with a solid growth of the driver the gap between the top and the ceiling is vanishingly small, and the steering wheel still wants to raise slightly higher. However, it is not difficult to sit down comfortably – especially as the seats have fully preserved their shape and elasticity. And at the expense of a high landing excellent visibility and sense of dimensions of the car is provided.

I also switch on the “drive” with a soft shock (which was the norm in 87th, and on modern boxes it is possible to consider a sign of approaching problems). The engine, without the slightest delay, responding to the pedal with a classic cable drive, easily gains momentum, making a pleasant bass rumble, which is extremely delicate and dosed through the excellent noise insulation.

Maneuverability and maneuverability is exemplary – adjusted for the era, of course! The steering gearbox provides excellent feedback, the machine listens clearly to the steering wheel and unfolds literally on the spot. The car does not provoke an active drive, although, of course, there is some potential for this even in the most ordinary civil version (and there were also “charged” small circulation, and purely sports professional). This “time machine” makes you want to drive in a fancy, leisurely way.

Moreover, the suspension has completely preserved all its characteristics, although it is not clear how it can be at the age of 32, even in the absence of mileage! The front and rear suspension settings polished by Stuttgart engineers (the last one is a complex five-lever) carry the car almost like on air cylinders! “Lying policemen” pass as if they are not present, and thus softness on roughness does not generate valleys in turns – the car confidently enters turns and stably moves in strips as to modern “solarisam” and “logs” even did not dream.

However, all this is, of course, trifling. The main thing for this copy is the ability to convey the spirit of the time, and it does it exemplary. The era is gone, but the car keeps it and carefully carries it to the next generations…

Model History

It is not uncommon to say that the Mercedes 190 was developed as the main competitor of the third series from BMW, but this is true only in part. In 1973, the Arab League refused to supply oil to the leading Western powers, which supported Israel in its conflict with Syria and Egypt – fuel prices rose everywhere, there was a shortage of it. Despite the fact that the acute phase of the oil confrontation lasted only a year (!), its impact was felt all over the world for more than a decade – in particular, in the automotive industry the crisis caused a sharp development of the segment of compact and efficient cars, which, in fact, became a very positive trend. As part of this trend and was developed “baby-benz” Mercedes 190, which instantly reached the top of the sales ratings of the D-segment in Europe and became popular in America.

Mercedes 190 of the W201 family has been on the conveyor for 12 years – from 1982 to 1993. When launching a new model of transition to a promising, but not associated with the typical Stuttgart high-tech class front drive, fortunately, did not happen (although there were plans!). But in comparison with the W123 family that prevailed before the W201, the new line of vehicles became much shorter in bodywork, lighter in weight, and significantly reduced the drag coefficient, which affects fuel consumption.

Of course, the main series of gasoline engines M102 became lighter, more powerful and more economical than its predecessor M115. In terms of commercial operation of the 190s, the famous Mercedes-Benz OM601/602 millionaire diesel engines have traditionally been excellent, and the model was also famous for its sports successes in the DTM series body racing.

The Ford Tourneo Courier was first displayed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2013. Since then, the manufacturer has been gradually making changes to its child. The last time it was planned to hold a full facelift of the model. It hasn’t undergone any major changes, and now there are new photos of the updated passenger car in the networks. The tubular safety frame of the car has undergone a noticeable transformation, and the novelty is being tested in the Alps. The utility car is still being actively developed, confirming the fact that the chassis are constantly improved in the conditions of mountain roads. Ford Windstar 3.8 V6 test drive of 1995

The owner is Vladimir Nosikov, 28 years old Muscovite, a driver and a staff member.

The car is a 1995 Ford Windstar GL. Mileage – 230 000 km. The first generation was produced from 1995 to 1998. Purchased for 150 000 rubles.

Vladimir tells the story of his car.

– Such a car was in our family for many years – my father was engaged in distillation of used cars from Europe and brought Ford Windstar from Germany in 1999.

Relatives liked the minivan very much, and they asked to help them find a similar Windstar, which was done – in 2004, their father brought them a very successful and well-groomed copy of 1995, the first year of production of this model. Our Windstar was sold a long time ago, and I haven’t heard about the fate of the second one for a long time, because relatives didn’t live nearby and we didn’t talk too often. However, in 2014, I came across one of the largest car ad websites, the very familiar Ford. “Isn’t that Uncle Viti’s car? – I asked my father, and he also recognized her. At that time I had a VAZ-2113, but I wanted a Windstar – I knew this minivan well (both in general and in particular), its merits and convenience. The car was sold for 180,000 rubles, but by family friendship it was given to me for 150,000. For exactly the same amount of money I sold VAZ and, in fact, just changed!

Despite Ford’s age, the exchange was great: after a primitive and close “zhigulenka” old “American” seemed just a high-tech ship! However, after the purchase in 2014, I had a chance to ride it for only three days – and I was taken into the army. And since 2015, I’ve been riding it all the time, and the car doesn’t let me down or bother with repairs.

Today, Ford Windstar is quite rare in Russia, although its classmates, such as Dodge Caravan, still meet. Windstars for the whole country are usually on sale on the largest car resources – not more than a dozen. The usual price for such cars today is from 100-150 thousand for cars in average condition and up to 200 thousand for well-preserved copies.


Probably hardly anyone would call Ford Windstar handsome today, but at the time of his appearance in 1995, when he changed his angular and stupid predecessor, the biodesign with its licked inexpressiveness was at the peak of fashion. Windstar is fully consistent with this style, both on the outside and inside.

Our Windstar’s driver’s door swings open at almost 90 degrees, which is noticeably more than the front passenger’s – it’s easier to get behind the wheel. Passengers in the second and third row enter the cabin through a sliding door on the right.

Interestingly, by the end of the 90s minivans started to have sliding doors from both sides of their competitors, but on Windstar the Fordovtsy, when preparing the next package of modifications for the new 1998 model year, went for a temporary trick – an additional entrance to the cabin for passengers on the left side was realized through the driver’s door, which was enlarged for this purpose, and the driver’s seat was made with a folding backrest, as it is practiced in all three-door hatchbacks. A full-fledged second sliding door appeared only on the second generation of Windstar after 1999.


The dashboard and centre console are solid and monumental. At the wheel you feel like you’re on a bridge or at least a driver of a large full-size coach. The console is extended to the driver, the barn is vertically adjustable, all buttons and handles are visible and easily accessible. The interior is very well thought out.

The electronic dashboard is a rarity on Windstars. The model was equipped with such an instrument only in 1995 – then, strange as it may seem, they switched to a more traditional arrowhead. The main advantage of the “digital” variant is easy switching through the route menu from miles to kilometers and from gallons to liters!

Windstar is a seven-seater car. It has two front seats, a sofa for two on the second row and a passage past it to the third three-way. The seats are excellent – soft, high enough, with plenty of legroom.


There are few electrical adjustments in the seats, but the driver has a pneumatically controlled lumbar support, which is extremely useful in long-distance travel, for which Windstar is ideal.

Different niches and containers for Windstar’s things, oddly enough, aren’t too rich. The glove box volume is quite modest, but there is a very large tray for audio cassettes. There is a retractable cup holder for two jacks, pockets in the doors and a drawer under the front passenger seat.

Other nice chips include electrically operated rear windows, elastic plastic in the cabin and keyhole lighting on the outside – if you approach a locked car and pull the handle outside, the lights in the cabin and the well will turn on!


The Ford Windstar was equipped with a 6-cylinder injector V-shaped V-rays from the Vulcan and Essex families. In 1995, there were two engines: a 3-liter engine with a capacity of 147 hp and 3.8 liters with 155 hp. In the following years, engine power gradually increased.

On our Windstar, we had a 3.8-litre Essex, a front-driven, transversely mounted 3.8-litre engine. The range of these engines is as large as it is old. They lead their lineage from the late 60’s and over the years have found many variations for dozens of Ford models and other brands. Carburettor and injector, positioned longitudinally and transversely, with a wide range of capacities and attachments.

The ACP is a 4-stage “classic” with torque converter, controlled by a handle on the steering wheel with an overdrive button. This combination of engine and transmission is known to motorists for its much more common combination than Windstar’s Ford Taurus. The engine and gearbox are considered to be afraid of overheating – the engine requires a proper cooling system, and the “machine” does not feel sorry for long runs at high speed.

This Windstar hasn’t surprised anyone in four years of operation. All the work that was carried out was related to maintenance and expenditure and concerned mainly the suspension, which is quite simple (front McPherson, rear torsion beam). Front brake discs – 5000 rubles, pads – 1700 rubles, steering rods and tips – 1300 rubles each, stabilizer racks – about 1500 rubles of steam, shock absorber racks – 9000 rubles per pair. The availability of almost all of the marketable spare parts. But, according to the owner, Windstar may soon need to replace the mass flow rate sensor. And this is a detail of those that can’t be bought “around the corner”: it is custom-made and expensive – about 7000 rubles.

On the move

As it happens when you meet almost all the old Americans, the first effect of Windstar – amazing softness! The energy-intensive pendant of this “bead” swallows any city roughness, including log-like “lying policemen”, and what is “under swallowed” is damped by soft velour pillows of seats.

At the start the car reacts to gas very cheerfully – classic American V-shaped models are famous for their low speed traction. The catch after a hundred is already sluggish. And cotton brakes require pressure from the soul, not sorry.

Large and massive car confidently holds the road, up to 120 km / h do not have to taxi, the steering wheel is held by a finger. Standard tires of Windstar are 205/70 R15, and on our copy there is rubber with the same diameter, but slightly wider – 215/70. At partings in ruthlessness the back is shaking: the suspension there, as it has already been said, is dependent, with a beam. The car does not leave the trajectory, but slightly “sausages”.

On parking lots it is a little bit more difficult: the body is long (5110 mm), and the angle of rotation of wheels is small. Because of this, where an ordinary sedan is pulled out at the first time, Windstar requires 2-3 receptions. The visibility, in spite of the abundant glazing, is so good. Do not add visibility and blinded flat mirrors rear view, in the blind areas of which too much is lost.

The consumption is just as pleasing: in mixed mode city-track it is a very moderate 12 liters, which is for such a “crocodile” – and not the consumption at all!

Model history

In 1986, the first 7-seater minivan – the rear-wheel drive model Aerostar – appeared in the Ford range of cars. By 1994, the angular Aerostar had become obsolete and was replaced by the Windstar front-drive biodesign in the 90s.

First of all, the car was positioned as a minibus for family and travel, but it also had a practically unknown in our country commercial cargo-version without glazing and with a cargo body.

The new minivan quickly gained popularity as the safest among classmates – in the crash-test it gained maximum points and already had two airbags and ABS in the base. The car was produced until 2004, having gone through a restyling process in 1998 with the renewal of bumpers and optics, as well as with the addition of a second sliding door on the left.

Changes were made to the model all the time, not only during restyling. Each year, Windstar has been improving the model by adding various options. In the new generation of cars introduced all the most relevant at that time, designer and technical refinements. In particular, the steps were abandoned, and the windshield was made whole for the first time. The wheelbase grew from 3,500 to 3,730 mm (75 series, 67 series, with its own base). It is necessary to mention separately a bumper with characteristic “fangs” in the form of heads of shells – it is often called by own name “dagmar” (dagmar).

The history of the appearance of this name is naughty. According to the designers’ idea the projectiles were to symbolize the swiftness of the car, but the slang name “dagmar” was not connected with the speed, guns, shells and bullets. In the early 1950s in America was very popular actress Virginia Ruth Egnor, who acted under the pseudonym Dagmar. She gained fame primarily for her breasts and her manner of showing it on TV. The shape of her breasts seemed to the designers to be very similar to this bumper (or the shape of the bumper – the breast), which was immediately nicknamed “dagmar”. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the actress’s chest, but the bumper looks interesting.

The engine of the first Fleetwood 75 came from the late version of the previous generation – 331st series (that’s how its volume is in cubic inches, in liters – 5,4). This engine was developed directly for the Cadillac and Oldsmobile. The power of the huge V8 today is not striking – only 170 hp, although in later versions after the installation of two four-chamber carburettors from it were able to squeeze out as much as 270 hp. (there were also intermediate versions with 230, 240 and 250 hp). The engine for that time (Lord, give me back my 53rd!) is quite traditional: short-stroke, with a full-bearing crankshaft and hydraulic compensators. By the way, the first hydraulic compensators appeared in the engines of Cadillac – on the engine V16 in the Model 452 1930, so it was not an innovation for Fleetwood. However, there was a nuance: hydraulic compensators did not work very well at high revs. That’s why in the distant 50s American “tuners” (or “collective farmers”?) simply threw them away and in return put ordinary pushers from the Studebaker V8 engine.

However, let’s go back to the undercover space – there is still a lot of interesting things here. First of all, what are these two glands sticking out on the right and left? And this is the compressor of the conditioner and the pump of GURA. Yes, both in 1953 were already on the Cadillac! However, as options, but hydraulic window lifters were “in the base”.

Now we have to pull ourselves together a little bit to avoid the luxury of 66 years ago. You should agree that not every car of that epoch could boast of such a set of options: air conditioner, window lifters, mountain lights and automatic transmissions… And also – natural wood, chrome and even a radio receiver. At the same time, there are usual “oars” that stand in cars with mechanical window lifters. Why are they here? And they are needed to open the windows.

Driver’s seat is unexpectedly convenient: there is a lot of space, the seat is unusually high for the American front sofa. In general, the interior, ergonomics and the entire dashboard here seem a little more modern than the exterior itself. Inside – the beginning of the sixties with this compact dashboard instead of scattered on the entire panel of individual scales and pointers, “licked” transition from the panel to the door cards, a large glovebox in front of the passenger. It seems that there has been more progress inside than outside. However, everything is very, very good. In the cabin, by the way, it is also much more convenient than in older cars at least 10 years older. Now the main thing is that it was better.

Usually the launch of the old V8 is a whole event, marked by the work of the gas pedal and the “suction”, then – the sound of the awakened gasoline eater. Everything in Fleetwood is somehow easier. Even the cold engine started at one turn of the key, and the sound… You know, to be honest, I expected more. If you listen to the motor from the outside, it sounds right – uterine, low, a little ominous, and very exciting. But there’s no sound inside. Most likely, it’s the “noise”, which strangely cuts off the low frequencies, letting in only the absurd squeak in the cabin. And it seems that in front of you there are not five and a half liters of Western luxury, but two liters of Eastern technology. It’s even a shame, by God.

Parking mode of the car park is not available. There is a neutral, drive mode (which is marked not as D, but as Dr), Low mode (first gear) and R mode. Therefore, before driving, it is necessary to remove the car from a parking brake for what the handle at the left hand should be turned aside and released. Now turn on the “Dr” and let’s go!

Let’s be honest: it is impossible to “drive” like this. Still, 170 hp and 2.8 tons of weight are never a sports car. Yes, on the first gear it is possible even to polish with wheels wet asphalt. But Caddy, in general, doesn’t care about it. Wheels can throw out from under themselves even the whole layers of asphalt, the heavy car will touch quietly anyway. Maybe our tires are to blame, maybe – road conditions. It wouldn’t be fair to call this Fleetwood a “vegetable,” but he deserves the title of phlegmatic guy. For example, let’s take a little shit.

So, the start we get outwardly spectacular, but actually not the fastest. Now let’s try to turn around abruptly by giving gas. The back axis, as it should be, goes into a skid, but … But inside this stupid maneuver is felt only on a little gone trajectory. There is no screeching of tyres, an overwhelming heel, which you expect from a heavy limousine. Here the weight works and up to strange good noise isolation. The way out of the skidding, the gas in the floor – and nothing … Already in the second gear Fleetwood tries to behave as a pathos limousine, not a sports car. And he does it. There is no kickdown, so to get out of the way, you need to slow down to a minimum to start the first gear, and then press the gas. And only then it will be possible to leave quickly. Just in case, I will notice that “to leave quickly” is on the scale of today. For 1953, it was incredibly fast, instantaneous.

And now we will travel in a normal mode.

At the moment of gear shifting the shocks are still noticeable, but not critical. But the algorithm of ACS operation differs greatly from modern algorithms. When switching upwards, everything is predictable, but when switching downwards, it is not always clear what kind of gear the automaton will put in. More precisely, it is always unclear. There is no tachometer in the car, the box switches down inconspicuously, so it is impossible to predict how the car will respond to the subsequent pressing of the gas pedal after the speed is reset. Maybe it will tear forward, or maybe it will start to gain speed barely. The whole story reminds me of the good old West with AMT of the first year of production. The same damn thing, only with the “crawling” mode of ACP.

Surprisingly, but in the Cadillac there is no such feeling of retro, which is given by many post-war vehicles of this class: tightness behind the wheel, swelling, desire to leave the trajectory on a straight line, inaccuracy of heavy steering. Here everything is different. In his time, this Fleetwood really was on the front of the hull for many of his contemporaries. The steering is not only light thanks to the power steering, but also quite accurate. Though, as modern observers like to say about modern cars, “in a near-zero zone of a steering wheel not informative” – there is such business. In the corners of the Cadillac also follows the turn of the steering wheel very accurately.

The engine with the box is mounted on the X-shaped frame through the thick rubber supports, so there is almost no vibration.

What Fleetwood lacks is good braking and vision. The brakes are drummed and can even start the car in the yuzzle. But the effort on the pedals is very large, and the reaction to the press is again difficult to guess. The pedal as if rests against a brick, but it does not mean that it is useless to press it. On the contrary, just after the “brick” brakes start working. It is impossible to calculate the effort, you just need to press the pedal at random. In the end, the Cadillac will stop after all, but it is likely that it will do so later than it would be desirable. It’s especially disappointing that the automatic transmission does not allow you to brake with the engine, so the drawbacks of brakes seem much more significant. Now let’s move on to the review.

What can I say: the hood cannot be short with a car length of six meters. Worse than that it is unrealistic to estimate dimensions: a mascot in the form of a goddess of speed with a waving shawl helps out a little, but here edges of front wings are not visible.

Rear-view mirrors then too have not yet learned to do. Looking in salon, it is possible only to paint sponges (though it is not exact, I did not try), and that which stands on a rack of a driver’s door, it is necessary only for beauty – on its case there is an engraving with an emblem of the Cadillac. You can only see in it a piece of board and a little bit of something behind it, which is absolutely not enough for safe driving. In the garage, I was only able to drive the car in reverse with the owner’s prompts, waving at me energetically (and sometimes panically) from the outside. And then I figured out how to get out of Caddy more than once: to open the door from the inside, you don’t have to pull or turn the handle, but move it back.

As I said, the next fifth generation of Fleetwood 75 of 1954 was not so much a revolutionary as an evolutionary generation, resulting from the constant modernization of the previous generation. In principle, our fourth generation differed from the previous generation only in more modern design and the presence of ACP.
